Elizabeth Chew

I am an art historian by training, a museum curator and educator dedicated to telling the whole truth about American history. I am particularly interested in the interpretation of enslavement to public audiences and have deep experience in working at historic plantation sites with Descendants of Enslaved Communities.

I am a native South Carolinian who grew up in the SC Lowcountry. I am a specialist in African-American History & Genealogy. I specialize in reconstructing 19th & 20th century historic communities. I have an interdisciplinary background with experience as a genealogist, historian, archivist, archaeologist and exhibit designer.

George H. McDaniel

I am the director of interpretation at Magnolia Plantation & Gardens. My background and graduate work is in Southern history, particularly African American history, and its interpretation at historic sites. As most people’s first encounter of this difficult history is at these sites, such work is of the utmost importance.

A museum professional, I’ve worked with the Smithsonian to Atlanta History Center to Drayton Hall, where education, interpretation, and management programs under my leadership have earned awards at local, state, and national levels. I believe every place has engaging stories to tell, as featured in my book, Drayton Hall Stories.

Georgette Mayo, MA, MLIS

Georgette Mayo is currently the Processing Archivist for the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture at the College of Charleston. During her eighteen and a half years at Avery, Mayo has functioned in the role of Interim Director, Project, and Reference Archivist.

I am dedicated to researching and preserving our history. I am author of Navigate to Success, Understand the Past… and grantee of Waverly, a Historic Perspective through the Eyes of Seniors; Gullah to a New Generation. If our heritage is going to be preserved, our work must be intergenerational.

Gregory Sprouse

I am an urban and regional planner with a focus on community and economic development. For the past 21 years I have worked for Central Midlands Council of Governments, a regional planning agency serving the four county area around Columbia.

Isabelle Britto

I am a researcher and curator specializing in African American and African Diasporic history and culture. My work is dedicated to uncovering the hidden histories of the African Diaspora, with a particular focus on how Afro-descendants preserve and transform the intangible heritage they brought with them from the African continent.

Janie Campbell

I am preservation consultant at a law firm that assists commercial real estate developers access historic tax credits and other financial incentives for historic preservation. I have eight years of experience with the historic tax credit program and National Register of Historic Places nominations.

Jessica Berry

Dr. Jessica Berry is an accomplished researcher, and educator with extensive knowledge and expertise in the Gullah Geechee language, culture, and history. Dr. Berry is an entrepreneur and founder of The O.K.R.A. Soup Foundation, an organization that empowers Gullah Geechee youth through the We Been Ya: Geechee Girls Rock Program.

I am a historian who has done extensive research on African American history in South Carolina, especially in connection with enslavement and the civil rights era.

I currently work in an archival position in a public library. I manage our Special Collections and our online database. My background is a mixture of archive, library, and museum work. My happiest days are working in an archive, discovering long forgotten treasures!
