The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) David Hunter Post was formed in the late 19th century, with the historic hall being built in 1896. The Second Founding, the not-for-profit philanthropic partner of the Reconstruction Era National Park, helped gain funding from the Beaufort County ATAX grants for the repair of the underlying floor structure and support the efforts of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to preserve the historic structure which serves today as a community meeting hall, museum and educational space.
