In 2017, a local resident reached out to the Historic Charleston Foundation (HCF) for help preserving the historic Mosquito Beach community. HCF applied for a National Park Service Civil Rights Grant which allowed for researching the history of the community, collecting oral histories, the creation of a website to share the history, nominating the community to the National Register of Historic Places and to have a SC State Historic Marker erected. An additional grant in 2018 garnered funds to preserve and restore the historic Pine Tree Hotel at the center of Mosquito Beach.
