In 2001 the City of Myrtle Beach purchased the property when a road development project threatened the historic school. A committee was formed of former students, community members and other interested parties to help save the school. Although the structure couldn't be saved, historic materials were saved when the building had to be taken down. A new site was purchased nearby and the school was rebuilt using much of the saved material. The new "old" building contains a museum dedicated to the history of the school, as well as a space for community education programs and events.
