Immanuel Institute

Aiken

The building is the only historical African American institution currently being used as a public building for secular purposes. It borders Founders Park dedicated to the eight men, 5 of whom were African American, who founded Aiken County. The building will hold both temporary and permanent exhibits demonstrating the contributions of African Americans to the history, culture and art of Aiken County.

How to get involved: Potential volunteers may contact CAAHAC by its website caahac.org or its email at aikenculturalcenter@gmail.com

There are many churches, businesses and homes important to African Americans that have already been torn down and been overbuilt. The Immanuel Institute was originally founded and constructed as a school and is the largest building (other than churches) that remains and is recognized as a significant artifact of African American life after the Civil War. Its original purpose was to educate formerly enslaved people.
Project Start Date: 2004

Challenges :Fundraising has been the greatest challenge. The Board began its efforts in 2004 and it has taken nearly 20 years to complete the renovations. The Center was one of three projects in the City of Aiken to benefit from a community fundraising effort that took place in two phases over 5 years. The funds came in periodically from the Community Foundation of the CSRA. The Board also raised funds through small fundraising dinners, breakfasts and appeals to local churches, organizations such as the Concerned Ministers and local and state legislators. We still face the challenge of repaying a couple of construction loans and raising funds to set up permanent exhibits.

Problems Solved :One of the challenges we faced was near destruction of the building due to soft soil subsidence after a major storm. We were able to repair the damage and continue renovations only after borrowing funds from the US Small Business Administration. Although it is a long term, low interest loan, we have been unable to get an full statement of the current amount owed and the amount if paid off at once. If possible, raise as much money as you can ahead of starting the project. Finally, use as much donated labor as possible.
