Liberty Hill Historical and Genealogical Society

North Charleston

The community of Liberty Hill is one of the oldest Black communities in Charleston. Freed people Paul and Harriet Trescot bought 112 acres of farmland north of Charleston in 1864. They sold the land to four freedmen (Ishmael Grant, Aaron Middleton, and Plenty & William Lecque) with the goal of establishing a settlement of freepeople in 1871. Liberty Hill became a thriving neighborhood with many Black businesses by the mid-20th century. Liberty Hill Historical and Genealogical Society documents local family histories, genealogy, and the preservation of older buildings and homes within the community.
