Mapping Charleston’s Black Burial Grounds Project

Charleston

Made possible by a National Park Service African American Civil Rights Grant, the purpose of this project is to create a digital map of burial sites to increase public awareness of Black burial grounds and strengthen protections for these sacred spaces as Charleston grows and develops. Project partners include the Preservation Society of Charleston (PSC), Anson Street African Burial Ground Project (ASABG), and the City of Charleston Department of Planning & Preservation, with the support of the International African American Museum. The scope of this project is limited to burial locations inside the City of Charleston Urban Growth Boundary.

How to get involved: The Mapping Charleston’s Black Burial Grounds digital map resource will be available on the PSC website by the end of Summer 2024: https://qrco.de/MCBBG
