McClaren Medical Shelter

Greenville

This building, which is in the process of completing its registration as a Historic Landmark, once was the only medical clinic for Black Greenville citizens during the horrific Jim Crow Era. We owe its building, establishment, and service to Dr. Edward McClaren–a true trailblazer, entrepreneur, and civil servant, who was one of the first black physicians in Greenville. Today, we are bringing this space back to life through the McClaren Institute for Health & Quality of Life, named in Dr. McClaren’s memory and legacy.
