The stabilization and rehabilitation of the circa 1870 schoolhouse are a part of larger preservation efforts by the Soapstone Preservation Endowment to preserve the cultural history of the Liberia Community in Pickens, SC, including the Soapstone School and the Soapstone Baptist Church. The schoolhouse will eventually be furnished as it was in its earlier years to give visitors an experience of Black education in the upstate prior to the 1950s.
